Thoracoscopy
Thoracoscopy, also known as video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions within the chest or thoracic cavity. It involves the insertion of a small, flexible tube with a camera (thoracoscope) and other surgical instruments through tiny incisions in the chest wall. This allows the surgeon to visualize the internal structures of the chest and perform various surgical interventions with less trauma compared to traditional open surgery.

Patient
Preparation:
- The patient is placed under general anesthesia, and a single-lung ventilation tube is often used to collapse one lung, providing the surgeon better access to the operative side.
Incision
Placement
Typically, two or three small incisions (ports) are made between the ribs. The thoracoscope and surgical instruments are inserted through these ports.
Visualization:
- The thoracoscope, equipped with a light source and camera, is introduced to provide a magnified and illuminated view of the chest cavity. This image is displayed on a monitor, guiding the surgeon throughout the procedure.
Treatment
or Diagnosis:
- Depending on the purpose of the thoracoscopy, various procedures can be performed. This may include the removal of tumors, biopsy of suspicious tissues, drainage of fluid or air from the chest, or the treatment of conditions like pleural effusion or pneumothorax.
Closure:
- After completing the necessary interventions, the instruments are removed, and the incisions are closed with stitches or staples. In some cases, absorbable sutures may be used, eliminating the need for removal.
